Putting a business on-line.

AstraZeneca is one of the world's most innovative pharmaceutical companies. They make a wide range of products that have a real impact on treatment options in healthcare. One of their most significant products provides relief for gastrointestinal distress. Heartburn and stomach upset are hidden but major contributing factors reducing productivity in the workplace.

The challenge
With its highly successful Direct Marketing program driven through a call centre, AstraZeneca wanted to find a way to integrate this off-line program into an efficient and secure database-driven Web application. The web site had to be interactive and intelligent in that it had to manage personalized information specific to each individual. Because the treatment process occurs over a long period of time, the site had to be both simple and compelling, and intelligent. It had to guarantee people would keep coming back to manage and adapt their ongoing treatment over a 12- month period, and provide the mechanisms for on-going dialogue with the visitor patient. And, the site had to be secure to address all privacy issues and concerns.

Our approach
The girelief.com Web site was created and deployed within corporate intranets for employees of major corporations. The program created for AstraZeneca enrolls clients into a health management program through simple instructions and feedback. The path each employee takes depends on their answers to a series of survey questions. Through each stage they view valuable, helpful information about their specific stage and condition. To help manage individuals through the process, an automatic email notification system was created to remind patients to schedule their next appointment with the site.

In addition, program administrators were provided with business reports and analysis using various views of the relational data in a privacy-protected aggregate format.

The technology
Developed with Microsoft technologies the application deployed a relational database management system as backend to a web-based interface, implemented via Microsoft Windows DNA architecture. Application functionality was segmented into a three logical tiers for improved autonomy, scalability and performance. Presentation tier was developed using ASP (Active Server Pages), HTML, DHTML and JavaScript, the business-logic tier implemented via COM (Component Object Model) and the data services tier responsible for data storage and integrity consisting of a Microsoft SQL Server 2000 data warehouse.

The outcome
The pilot program was deemed a success with sign ups from major corporations and significant visitor patient enrollments.
